Woking Blackhawks v Spelthorne Kestrels (26 ~ 29)
Woking Blackhawks v Portsmouth Ballers (20 ~ 17)
Woking Blackhawks v Brighton Cougars (37 ~ 99)

A mixed bag for Blackhawks this weekend with a heavy loss to Cougars on the Saturday, followed by a much more upbeat performance at the end of month tournament held at ACS on Sunday.

Woking Blackhawks v Brighton Cougars

The league match against Cougars was a testing match for Blackhawks. The opening five of James Wildsmith, Alex Ingram, Sam Hatton, Kyle Miller and Elliot Farmer took to the court fearing a strong performance from Cougars. Whilst they would later be slightly overwhelmed, the home side took to the opening quarter with a degree of confidence which has been too often missing. Captain Mandius Lundal was brought on by Coach Dean early in the quarter and scored a great basket. All of the Blackhawks baskets in the quarter were worthy of note and James Wildsmith and Alex Ingram were firing well off each other and claimed a basket each. Andrew Wright showed his ability with yet another three pointer. Despite taking the lead on three minutes, the quarter finished with Blackhawks trailing 11 ~ 15.

The second quarter saw Cougars change their tactics and despite some tactical direction from Coach Dean, Blackhawks were unable to stop Cougars from pulling away. As always seems to be the case though, Blackhawks kept playing and there were some notable baskets, particularly when fellow u14 team mates, Harry Wood and Andrew Wright combined. Harry made 6 points in this quarter, with Mandius Lundal coming in to help out the two youngsters by finishing off a contested ball which both Andrew and Harry just couldn't quite sink. Alex Ingram also made an excellent basket as a result of a strong drive. Ryan Hartman came on to add the much needed height in defence and new addition Kyle Miller came on with Jack Chatwin to show that despite the strength of the opposition they were very strong at pressurising the offence. The quarter finished 22 ~ 49

Blackhawks came out from the half time break and tried to change their tactics, unfortunately in their frustration and haste to move the ball around they were giving turnovers up far too easily and their confidence took a nasty knock. Mandius Lundal (4) and Harry Wood (2) were the only Blackhawks scorers and although Jack Chatwin and Kyle Miller continued to impress with their determination in defence. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to stop Cougars from drawing out their lead to 28 ~71.

The final quarter continued in the same vein, with Blackhawks continuing to play but not being able to match Cougars strong performance. Blackhawks baskets came from Alex Ingram, James Wildsmith, Sam Hatton and Harry Wood. The game closed with Cougars in a commanding position 37 ~ 99.

ACS Tournament

Sunday was a much sunnier day for Blackhawks, not a weather forecast, but a reflection of an enjoyable and much more evenly matched pair of games which saw Blackhawks playing in a far more confident and stylish manner. The tournament was more an opportunity for the team to get some much need time together, that said they came onto the court apparently relishing the competition. Both matches were exciting, with some great baskets made with a confidence which completely belies their position in the league.

The first match against Spelthorne Kestrels looked like it might be a walkover for Blackhawks, however in the third quarter Kestrels fought back hard and after a little wobble from Blackhawks which allowed their opponents to put seven points up without an answer, Blackhawks took a deep breath, took control of the ball and put the game beyond reach. The game finished 20 ~ 17 in Blackhawks favour.

Due to the limited number of teams taking part, Blackhawks second match was also the final, so they took to the court against Portsmouth Ballers. This turned out to be a very evenly matched game, with Ballers being a raw but talented street style team. Blackhawks were giving a good account of themselves and the match was pretty much basket for basket all the way through, until the final quarter when Blackhawks got themselves slightly flustered and Ballers put on four points. Blackhawks were coming back and the flow of the game looked to be going their way toward the end of the match but they were unlucky not to have four attempts on the basket drop in their favour.

Overall some excellent performances from all the players who took part, each one showing a renewed confidence which they should remember and take with them into their remaining league matches. They were playing much more consistently as a team, passing and sharing possession of the ball. The players were Mandius Lundal (Captain), Casper Lucas, Sam Hatton, Jack Chatwin, Ryan Hartman, Elliot Farmer, Alex Ingram, Jack Chatwin and Joe Cunningham.

21.01.12 Solent Kestrels 114-30 Woking Blackhawks

After last week's high, Blackhawks were brought down to earth with a bump by an on-form Kestrels side. After a slow start from both sides and one where Blackhawks scored first, the home team quickly regained control and showed how well drilled they were to close the match with a commanding 114-30 win.

Blackhawks' opening five of James Allen (Cpt), Mandius Lundal, Elliott Farmer, Sam Hatton and Alex Ingram made a good start, and for the first few minutes it was fairly end to end, with both sides being denied by poor finishing. The opening basket of the match was scored by Mandius Lundal and he would go on to score two further free throws in this quarter.  James Allen dropped in two baskets and one free throw and Alex Ingram marked his return to the team with an impressive drive and basket. Jack Chatwin, Andrew Wright and James Wildsmith all made an appearance in this quarter to good effect, although once Kestrels got themselves organised, their strength across the bench began to show. By the end of the quarter Kestrels had pulled out a 29-11 lead.

The second quarter continued in much the same way and although Blackhawks were in danger of being overwhelmed by Kestrels, their offence still lacked the finishing needed to keep Kestrels in check. By the end of this quarter James Allen had added four points and Mandius put up a further three, but this was not enough to slow Kestrels. Coach Dean was doing his best, rotating the bench to bolster the Blackhawks defence as much as possible. Ryan Hartman came on to provide some fresh legs to the Blackhawks defence, unfortunately the tactics weren't enough to stop Kestrels pulling away. The quarter finished with Blackhawks trailing 60-18.

Blackhawks came out for the third quarter revitalised after their team talk from Coach Dean, although the confidence didn't last long, James Allen and Andrew Wright both managed to get a basket each, but they just couldn't seem to stop the Kestrels. The quarter finished with Blackhawks trailing 86-22

The whole Blackhawks' bench got some game time in the final quarter and although they deserve credit for continuing to play, it was clear that the Kestrels performance had demoralised them. Mandius Lundal, Alex Ingram, and James Allen all got a basket each, although James then suffered a recurrence of an earlier injury and was forced to sit out the end of the fourth quarter. The match finished with a Kestrels win 114-30.

Overall a disappointing result, however this is Blackhawks first season together and they have been badly hit by injuries and absences, they will undoubtedly continue to improve together as a team provided they continue to train and practise together. As Michael Jordan said.......
"I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results."....

14.01.12 Woking Blackhawks v Tonbridge Knights (74 ~ 60)

Blackhawks hosted Tonbridge Knights at the Leisure Centre today in their second encounter this season. The game turned into a closely matched and entertaining game which went to extra time, following a spirited final quarter fight back from Knights.

The first quarter opened at a very evenly matched pace and although Knights scored frist, Blackhawks regained their composure and started opening up a lead which would last through to the final quarter. The opening five of James Allen (cpt), Mandius Lundal, Casper Lucas, Elliot Farmer and Sam Hatton all performed well with an attacking style, but also defending well. Following their recent run of defeats, Blackhawks cam out looking like they meant business, new team player, Kyle Miller also made an appearance in the first quarter. Points in the first quarter came from Casper Lucas (6), Mandius Lundal (2), James Allen (2) and Elliot Farmer (1). The quarter finished with Blackhawks leading 11 v 8.

The second quarter continued with Blackhawks looking like they would be taking full command of the match. They were confident in attack and strong in defence and they made far fewer handling errors than have been experienced in recent matches. Casper made some excellent fast breaks with James, and although both were denied by poor finishing, they were making sufficient attacks to keep adding to the scoreboard. Mandius Lundal, Ryan Hartman and Jack Chatwin all continued with good defensive skills, although Jack was unfortunate to suffer an injury which kept him off court for a while. Kyle Miller, a relative newcomer to the team also showed that he was willing to attack the basket. Points in this quarter came from Casper Lucas (8), James Allen (2) Mandius Lundal (2) and Elliott Farmer (2). The quarter finished with Blackhawks leading 29 v 22.

Blackhawks continued to consolidate their position in the third quarter and were in control of the game, Sam Hatton continued to press his attacks and was rewarded with a free throw. Mandius particularly impressed drawing some fouls and adding to the points with free throws. Ryan was determined in defence and intercepted a number of key balls. Points in this quarter came from Mandius Lundal (5) Elliott Farmer (2), James Allen (2) and Sam Hatton (1). The third quarter finished with Blackhawks leading 39 v 33.

The fourth quarter proved to be a bit of a challenge for Blackhawks, where they suddenly became too confident and they very nearly threw the match away. Knights were fighting back to save their day and Blackhawks embarked on some wasted attacks, when they could have just consolidated their position by playing the clock. As a result of this folly, the score was all even with Blackhawks in possession for the final attack and then..........the buzzer went. The score was 56-56, with points in this quarter coming from Casper Lucas (8) Kyle Miller (4) James Allen (2) Elliot Farmer (2) and Jack Chatwin (2)

After a serious team talk from Coach Dean, extra time began and Blackhawks came back out looking like they would take command again, and so it proved, Blackhawks put a further 18 points up whilst Knights only managed two baskets. The scorers in the final quarter were Casper Lucas (7), James Allen (6), and Kyle Miller (5)

Overall this was an excellent result for Blackhawks, who have been suffering from injuries and a reduced bench for many weeks now. The addition of Casper Lucas and new boy Kyle Miller added welcome strength to this team and whilst they very nearly gave it all up in the fourth, the final result was one which definitely reflected the overall run of play.

12.11.11 Woking Blackhawks v Bracknell Cobras ( 52~56 )

The closest match and probably the best team performance by the Blackhawks to date. This game showed that they are beginning to work together as a team, and some of the newer players are beginning to have confidence in their own performance.

The first quarter began with James Allen (captain), James Wildsmith, Mandius Lundal, Sam Hatton and Caspar Lucas. James Wildsmith was the first to score with an excellent fast break and Caspar enjoyed a good quarter with two baskets and two free throws. James Allen also scored two free throws. Jack Chatwin, Elliott Farmer and Alex Ingram came on during the quarter to good effect, with Jack providing two assists and Elliott and Alex both scoring a basket each. Sam also scored with a free throw following a penalty awarded during a fast break. Cobras headed the scoreboard throughout the first quarter, although by the end Blackhawks had kept them well within reach with a strong defensive performance, particularly from Mandius. The quarter finished with Cobras edging a slight lead at 17 ~ 16.

The second quarter began with Blackhawks looking like they would make full capital of their new found confidence in each other and briefly took the lead away from Cobras. Unfortunately, Blackhawks seemed to lose their way during the second half of the quarter and allowed Cobras to pull out a lead. Most of this was due to either some poor finishing or intercepted passes which unfortunately led to scoring opportunities. Blackhawks' points in this quarter came from James Allen (four baskets and one free throw) and Alex Ingram with two baskets. This quarter finished with Cobras taking a 38~29 lead.

The third quarter showed that Blackhawks could launch a fight back, they worked well together with a good defensive performance as well as ensuring they kept putting points on the board. James Wildsmith again scored the opening basket with another fast break very similar to the opening quarter showing an increased confidence on the ball. Ryan Hartman came on during this quarter and gave some height to the defence and also showed his increasing confidence in hustling for the contested ball. Andrew Wright from the u14NL team also made an appearance and showed the continued promise that has led to his regular appearance on this team. Caspar continued to give a good display with several fast breaks, showing great determination. He scored two baskets and was unfortunate not to score on at least two other opportunities. James Allen also dropped in three baskets to help bring Blackhawks back within striking distance at 43 points to Cobras 46.

The fourth quarter was all set for an exciting finale with both teams going all out to take the win. The tension was rising in the small but noisy crowd and the support was the loudest it has been so far this season. The game continued with both sides scoring pretty much one for one against each other. James Wildsmith was the main scorer for Blackhawks dropping in three baskets and one free throw, whilst Elliott came on and added a vital two free throws to the board. Unfortunately this tight game was taken just out of reach by Cobras who came out winners at 56 ~52.

Overall probably the best team performance from Blackhawks this season, despite the score line. After the game Coach Dean said, "As the saying goes, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", and we took that step this weekend.  Our journey may be a long one, and more than a little uphill, but we are finally on our way.  With the Rockets game next weekend we need to continue to focus on doing the simple things well and trust in each other to do what we know we can do."

06.11.11 Croydon Elite v Woking Blackhawks ( 63~92 )

A journey to South London showed that Blackhawks still need to put in some team training if they are to perform at their best up against a more experienced well drilled team. Once again the scoreline appears more one sided than the game really was, however, there is no substitute for playing and practising together.

The first quarter was fairly evenly matched on both sides, although Croydon, with a bigger and better drilled squad showed that were going to be more than a match for Blackhawks. The opening five were James Allen (Captain), James Wildsmith, Josh Foulkes, Elliott Farmer and Sam Hatton. Sam was unlucky to get injured in the first few minutes although he would make a reappearance in the subsequent quarters. The opening Blackhawks basket came from a great double act between James Wildsmith and James Allen, James W providing the assist to James A's basket. Alex Ingram and Mandius Lundal also came on to good effect with Mandius giving a good defensive display whilst Alex was unlucky not to score on his shooting attempts. Points came from James Wildsmith (2) James Allen (8) Josh Foulkes (4). The quarter finished with Elite in a 20~14 lead.

Blackhawks appeared to be slightly intimidated by Elite, and despite continuing to put points on the board, Elite were showing their team skills and gradually pulling away on the scoreboard. Highlights for Blackhawks were a fantastic three pointer from Mandius Lundal and some great penetrating drives from Sam Hatton who had recovered from his earlier injury. Points in this quarter came from James Allen (8), Mandius Lundal (5), Josh Foulkes (3) and Sam Hatton (1). The quarter finished with Elite in a 49 ~ 31 lead.

The third quarter was the best quarter for Blackhawks which saw them claw back the score a little. James Allen had a basket from a great steal, Sam Hatton had an impressive coast to coast drive, James Wildsmith and Josh Foulkes combined well and Josh particularly put his height to good effect under the basket. Mandius put in his solid defensive display but found himself up against similarly determined opposition. Points in this quarter came from James Allen (8), Josh Foulkes (6) and Sam Hatton (2). The quarter finished with Elite still in the lead 65 ~49.

The final quarter saw Elite increase the pressure and open up a convincing lead. On a positive, despite the disappointment, Blackhawks kept playing. Ryan Hartman came on to bolster Blackhawks defence and Andrew Wirght from the u14NL team came on to try and take some distance shooting opportunities. Points in this quarter, James Allen (8), Josh Foulkes (4) and James Wildsmith (2). The game finished with Elite coming out winners at 92~63

Overall, a disappointing result for Blackhawks but a game which they could learn from and they will undoubtedly improve with the added confidence that practice time together will bring. After the game Coach Dean said, "This game clearly illustrates that there is no substitute for regular and committed team practice.  There's still plenty of time to put things right but the determination to make that happen has to be brought to the practice court."

15.10.11  Woking Blackhawks v Solent Kestrels 52 ~ 78

Overall a game which was not as one sided as the score-line might suggest. Some good solid play from the whole team, but all let down by some poor offensive finishing. Had Blackhawks scored every time they rattled the basket they would have won this game.

Blackhawks' starters, James Allen (Cpt), Alex Ingram, Elliott Farmer, Josh Foulkes and Tyrone Wertheim produced a strong start with Josh winning the tip off and although Kestrels scored the opening basket, Blackhawks soon came back with Alex scoring his first of the quarter. This quarter was very evenly matched and paced, and although Blackhawks were at one stage 6 points up, Kestrels got themselves organised to end the quarter level at 17-17.  Alex added 6 points, James 4, one of his baskets from a steal, Tyrone and Sam also made contributions. With an under strength bench Coach Dean rotated the team well, making use of the whole bench to rest and test his players appropriately.

Kestrels came out the stronger side at the opening of the 2nd quarter and although Blackhawks were initially keeping pace on the scoreboard, a lack of finishing meant that Kestrels started to pull away. That was clearly displayed when, at one point, Blackhawks only managed to take 1 point from 6 foul shots. However, they kept playing and although the quarter finished with them down 29-42, Josh was able to add 5 points.  James also got two baskets and one free throw, and Elliott also scored.  Jack Chatwin and Ryan Hartman made their first appearances of the game in the second quarter and added some much needed height around the boards and both showed some good determination with contested balls.

The third quarter saw Kestrels continuing to exert pressure, however, Blackhawks kept up their efforts with Ryan scoring his first basket of the season.  Baskets also followed from Tyrone, Josh and Elliott. Further contributions were made by James, two baskets and an impressive 3-pointer from Sam. The quarter finished with Blackhawks trailing 46-66.

The final quarter was an opportunity for Blackhawks to try and fight back and for a while it looked like they might make a comeback as Tyrone opened with a classy 3 pointer. Tyrone followed this with a free throw, but unfortunately the fight back was short lived and with only one more basket from James in a low scoring quarter, Kestrels won the game 52-78.

Overall a good performance against a well drilled side, but this match would have been well within Woking's reach if only their finishing skills had matched some of their more ambitious shots. A clear sign, if ever there was one, that more time together on the practice court is required when faced with strong opposition. After the match Coach Dean said, "This was a difficult afternoon on the court.  Solent were well prepared and a tight unit who clearly put in the time on the practice court.  On a positive note we were able to push the ball up the court in transition which produced a number of scoring opportunities.  Unfortunately, our finishing just wasn't there today and our lack of team practice really showed.  We have one week to make the necessary adjustments before our double-header weekend away to Brighton Cougars in the league on Saturday and Medway Park Crusaders in the cup on Sunday."

09.10.11  Tonbridge Knights v Woking Blackhawks 44~63

The U18's first away game of the season saw them swoop into action against a very well presented and newly formed team from Kent, Tonbridge Knights. This was a good performance from Blackhawks who showed good speed on the break as well as some sharp defensive skills.

Blackhawks looked like they meant business right from the jump ball and played with a speed and pace which had been uncharacteristically missing from their opening game last week against the Atoms. The starting five included one player making his National League debut, Alex Ingram, and one player in his first game since returning to Woking, Casper Lucas.  hey joined Tyrone Wertheim, Mandius Lundal, and Jack Chatwin to start the game with a performance which appeared to surprise their opposition. The opening basket was scored by Casper Lucas which led to something of a rush in terms of points. Elliott Farmer, James Wildsmith and captain, James Allen all made appearances in the first quarter with a strong performance and some good skill displayed by all.  By the end of the first quarter, Casper had scored 4 point, including a 3-pointer, James Allen had 2 steals and 6 points, and Tyrone scored 2 points from a strong offensive move which led to two free throws. And with 2 points from Mandius, the quarter finished with Blackhawks ahead  5-19.

The second quarter continued in similar style with Blackhawks dominating the Knights. Sam Hatton made his National League debut and set off to show his speed and was rewarded with a basket. Alex Ingram showed great pace and determination and was unlucky not to have the drop go in his favour and the same looked like it might happen to Elliott Farmer, although his persistence paid off with a basket later in the quarter.  Mandius played a great quarter with 3 baskets, one from 3-point range, as well as dropping in a free throw. James Wildsmith was putting in some speed to the base line and was very unlucky to come up against some strong defending, but gave the width required to give options as the ball went up court. Tyrone also had a good quarter with two baskets racked up, one of them coming from a steal.  Not be outdone, James Allen also scored two baskets with one from a steal.  Tyrone and James combined on numerous occasions to show some good offensive skills. The half time break came with Blackhawks in a commanding lead, 15-39.

The Knights came out after half time re-energised and gave a far better performance than they had in the first half.  The quarter began so evenly, the first basket didn't come until nearly three minutes had come off the clock. When it did come however, it was Mandius Lundal doing the damage. Andrew Wright came on in this quarter and gave the width to the Blackhawks offence, taking up the baseline shot where James Wildsmith had given a good solid performance in the first half.  Despite missing his first few shots, Andrew's persistence paid off with a great three pointer from this young U14NL player.  Jack Chatwin also showed some great defensive skills particularly when teamed up with Mandius, as between them, they won almost every board. By the end of the third quarter Blackhawks had continued to add points but at a slower rate than the first half.  Baskets also came from Tyrone Wertheim and James Allen. The quarter finished 23-51.

The fourth quarter was a slightly rocky ten minutes for this otherwise solid performance from Blackhawks.  Whether it was the pace of the game or the fact that they were sitting on a strong lead, but they backed off slightly and Tonbridge took the opportunity to come back at them.  Once they had settled back in again it looked like the quarter should follow the previous three as Tyrone Wertheim opened the scoring with a three, shortly followed by a 2nd basket. However, about four minutes through the quarter Tyrone Wertheim and Sam Hatton were both injured in quick succession and had to be replaced on court. Unfortunately, Tyrone had to sit out much of the 4th quarter as a result, although luckily Sam was able to rejoin, particularly as he managed to capitalise from his pressure defence score from a steal later in the quarter. Ryan Hartman and Harry Wood both made excellent defensive contributions, adding height, tenacity and fresh legs, particularly at a time when the Knights appeared to think they might just have been able to turn the match in their favour.  Ryan and Harry both put on good offensive performances, and Harry, playing up from the u14s, managed to score for the second week in succession.  Alex Ingram also gave some pace in transition getting quickly up the court giving the Knights no time to settle in to their defence.  James Allen also continued to steal the ball on a couple of occasions and turned one of them into a basket. This quarter, and the match, finished with Blackhawks coming out the winners by 44-63.

Overall a great performance from this young team in only their second match together. The players who had their first run out today added the pace, and strength in depth, across the bench that was missing from last weeks performance. After the match Coach Dean said, "This was probably our best defensive display, particularly in the first three quarters, that this squad has produced since summer practice began back in July.  The Knights really had no answer to an almost perfectly executed half-court team defence.  We have a number of really tough games ahead, but if we can reproduce this level of defensive performance on a regular basis, and continue the improvement on the offensive end, there's really no reason for us to fear any team in this conference."

01.10.11  Woking Blackhawks  v Spelthorne Atoms 54-72

The Under 18 National League team started their season with a home match against Spelthorne Atoms. Both sides made a slow start and although Spelthorne came out as winners, Blackhawks showed that they would keep playing right up to the final whistle.

With a number of players away, Blackhawks were very well supported by a number of U16 and U14 National League players. Captain, James Allen, led out the opening five consisting of Tyrone Wertheim, Mandius Lundal, Josh Foulkes and Elliot Farmer. The opening basket was made by Tyrone Wertheim and Blackhawks started off at a pace which looked, for a short time, like they might be too much for their opponents, taking an eight point lead, however Atoms soon settled and points were put on by both sides. Mandius Lundall scored his debut basket for the U18's and Andrew Wright from the U14 National League team made an impressive appearance with a three pointer and a free throw a short time later. James Allen scored two baskets, one coming from a steal. Josh Foulkes used his height to good advantage, scoring twice and James Wildsmith came on to make his presence felt under the net with some good defensive play. The quarter ended with Atoms leading 20~14

The second quarter saw Blackhawks play in positive style but still not with sufficient speed on the break to capitalise on any defensive success. As a result Atoms were able to extend their lead slightly. Jack Chatwin made his debut in this quarter putting in some breaks to the base line, and Harry Wood from the U14 NL team, came on and scored a basket. Other points were put on the board by James Allen 4, Josh Foulkes 4 and Elliott Farmer 2.

The third quarter continued in the same style with Blackhawks playing well but just not getting the ball up court quickly enough, Atoms continued with their style of play. Frustratingly for Blackhawks they missed numerous basket opportunities by the smallest of margins, the drops just not going in their favour. Arthur Barendson from the U14 NL team, made his appearance felt with some good fast breaks. Ryan Hartman showed good determination in taking and holding the ball in two contentious decisions. Points in this quarter came from James Allen 8, Josh Foulkes 5, Tyrone Wertheim 2 . The quarter finished 51~ 42 to the Atoms.

Despite some good support from the leisure centre crowd, Blackhawks were unable to stage a winning comeback in the final quarter, however they did not give up, nor did they tire particularly. they were however again let down by their speed on the break and their finishing. Tino Mungosui made his debut to add some speed to the court but unfortunately the Atoms had taken the game out of reach by the final whistle. The game finished with Atoms winning by 72 ~54. Points in the final quarter were racked up by Josh Foulkes 6, Andrew Wright 2, Harry Wood 2, Tyrone Wertheim 2.

Overall a satisfactory performance to open the season, albeit a disappointing final result, this is a young team who can look forward to some better results as they improve their team skills. After the match Coach Dean said "We had a good paced and positive start to the game and again at the start of the 2nd quarter which is a big positive to take away with us.  Unfortunately, our pre-season preparation hadn't gone exactly according to plan but with 17 games ahead of us there is plenty of time to build a winning team."

U18NL Match Reports 2010/11

13.02.11 Woking Blackhawks v Reading Rockets (66-77)

Blackhawks were flying into the wind when they came up against an on-form Rockets side, in their home game on Sunday.  Despite some old faces returning to the team, Blackhawks were unable to capitalise on some scoring opportunities which saw Rockets take a 1st quarter lead.  Rockets managed to maintain the points differential throughout the rest of the game and despite some spirited and fast paced plays by both sides, Blackhawks weren't able to claw back the deficit.

The first quarter saw some excellent fast breaks from both sides, Coach Dean was rewarded with a slightly broader team, Captain Jordan Tyler leading out the opening five of
Freddy Dines, James Allen, Tyrone Wertheim and Elliott Farmer.  On the bench was Sam Brook making his first appearance in several games.  Clearly enjoying their return to the side, Elliott and Sam got busy with Sam scoring the last basket in the first quarter.

Blackhawks opened the second quarter with a storming start, Sam scoring Blackhawks first basket within the first 40 seconds.  Blackhawks looked to have turned the corner but Rockets proved to be strong and worthy opponents, and despite some strong attacks from Blackhawks, maintained a strong defence.  Tate Barber made an appearance in the 2nd quarter with several long distance attempts, but had to make do with racking up one basket and three free throws.  Seb Moulding also gave valuable court time with Coach Dean rotating the bench to good effect.  It was Freddy who hit the long distance target first with a 3 pointer, although not to be outdone, Tyrone, who had earlier scored a basket, also made an impressive 3 pointer late on in the quarter.  Elliott celebrated his return to the team with a valuable basket mid way through the quarter.  The second quarter finished with Blackhawks trailing 32 - 47.

The third quarter continued in very much the same vein, Blackhawks performing well, but never quite besting the strong Rockets team, although it was not for the want of scoring opportunities.  Tate put the first Blackhawks score on the board, and this was shortly followed by Jordan notching up two from the foul line and then later in the quarter pulled off his trademark 3 pointer.  Elliott, James and Tyrone all managed to put points on the board but unfortunately the score line at the close left Blackhawks trailing 45 - 61.

Coach Dean did his best to inspire and direct the team to a comeback, and for a while it looked like they might just do it, the team really dug in and never gave up.  Tyrone and James each putting six points up, Freddy notching up four points, Tate popping in a great three pointer and Tyrone adding to his score with a extra basket.  Unfortunately, despite this sterling display, it wasn't quite enough to pull back the deficit.  Blackhawks ended the match defeated but unbowed.

Overall this was another very creditable performance from this young team, it would have been easy for them to have rolled over at half time and accept defeat to a stronger and larger team, however, they never gave in and kept playing right up to the last buzzer.  The team remains compact with a limited squad size, however it is hoped numbers will return as studies permit.

After the match Coach Dean said, "This season the squad has faced some massive set-backs.  Some of our young players have had to deal with tremendous personal losses.  Thankfully they have been able to come through these difficult times and are showing some great inner strength and are now back and training with their team mates.  We can now begin to look forward once more and, with some hard work and determination, we will be able to play out the season the way we started it: as a winning TEAM!"

23.01.11 Woking Blackhawks v Bracknell Cobras  (58 - 47)

A low flying start led to a soaring finish for Blackhawks in their home match against the Cobras.  Still suffering from a limited bench, leaving Coach Dean a restricted squad to call upon, the visiting Cobra's brought a strong and varied squad which was sure to prove something of a challenge when it came to squad rotation, particular as this was their second game of the weekend.

Blackhawks were first to score with Freddy Dines putting the first points on the board, however the first quarter was notable more for its steady and slow pace of play.  Blackhawks appeared to be feeling slightly subdued from yesterdays defeat by Feltham Warriors, and they were taking their time to get going.  The first quarter was fairly evenly matched with Captain Jordan Tyler, Tyrone Wertheim, Elliott Farmer and Freddy all adding points.  Seb Moulding and James Allen also made an appearance on court.  The first quarter finished 13-15.

The second quarter was also played at a much slower pace than is customary for this Blackhawks team, with the high point being a skilful break by Seb leading to  an excellent finish, adding two much needed points.  Tyrone, James and Freddy also scored, although despite their efforts, the score at half time saw Blackhawks trailing 23-28.

Coach Dean obviously injected some inspirational words during the half time break, as Blackhawks came out for the third quarter, a wholly revitalised team.  They started strongly and picked up the tempo to their normal level and within the first two minutes they had clawed back the deficit and taken the lead.  Jordan, suddenly found his range again and dropped in three of his favoured deep court 3 pointers.  Tyrone and Freddy were also popping them in at the net, and both of them demonstrated some great controlling play, picking out players with some positive passing skills.  Defensively, Blackhawks also seemed to come alive with James taking four steals, one of them leading to a basket for himself.  Elliott showed some excellent defensive skills putting the Cobras under the kind of pressure which saw them only able to add nine points.  The third quarter finished with Blackhawks taking control at 43-37.

The final quarter saw Blackhawks continue their strong play, with Coach Dean making some effective rotational decisions, to ensure that the team was able to maintain the lead that they had established in the third quarter.  Tyrone dropped in an excellent 3 pointer, while Freddy netted two baskets plus both his free throws from a Cobras foul.  James seemed to be finding the basket had shrunk, but eventually stole the ball and scored. The match finished with Blackhawks on top 58-47.

Overall a game which was always well within Blackhawks reach, but one in which they only really started to display their true abilities once they had been spurred into action.  They showed that when up against it, they are capable of demonstrating some exciting and precise team play, aware of each others abilities, they are able to move the ball around the court with style.

22.01.11 Feltham Warriors v Woking Blackhawks (113 - 79)

Blackhawks had their wings clipped when they visited Warriors' home court in Feltham.  Still suffering from a limited bench, they played hard but were unable to overcome the need to rotate players when faced with the much larger squad put out by Warriors.  Blackhawks also suffered from a lack of `away` support to help spur them along.

Captain Jordan Tyler led out the starting five of Gima Nwana, Tyrone Wertheim, Freddy Dines and James Allen.  The team started playing with their usual skill and were proving a good match for Warriors.  Blackhawks were moving the ball well, and scoring from both sides saw the first quarter end with a slight advantage for Warriors.  This did however, set the pattern for the rest of the match, as Blackhawks were never really able to take control.

The second quarter continued in a similar vein with both sides being fairly evenly matched with good baskets going in on both sides, and although Coach Dean brought Seb Moulding on, the overall lack of rotation would prove decisive as the match went on.  Blackhawks did well to hold Warriors down to finish the quarter only ten points behind at 50-40.

The second half began with Warriors being able to capitalise on the size of their squad, and the pace of the match was beginning to take its toll on the Blackhawks team and although Tate Barber was able to make an appearance in the third quarter, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

The last quarter was played out with both teams giving their best, Warriors managed to push their total score to 113, however the Blackhawks still gave a very creditable performance and despite the odds, still put 79 points on the board.

Overall this was always going to be a testing match for Blackhawks against a strong, in-form team.  It was never going to be easy and Blackhawks should console themselves with the fact that they didn't just roll over and accept defeat.  They kept playing hard and with commitment, and that is always going to be the measure of a strong team.

16.01.11 National League home against Solent Kestrels  II (73-75)

A gutsy performance at home from a Blackhawks team decimated by absences due to illness and exam preparations.  Coach Dean was left with a massively reduced bench, with only five players making tip off.  However the score line does little to describe the commitment by all five players.  Led out by Captain Jordan Tyler, each played to their limit and, as a team, outperformed Kestrels, who were only able to take the lead, and hold it, in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter.

First quarter scoring for Blackhawks was opened by a great opening drive from Freddy Dines, where he was fouled and awarded a penalty and he scored both his free throws.  Tate Barber and James Allen were also fouled during their attacks and they also scored two out of two on their free throws.  Kestrels were weak defensively and the quarter finished 21 - 12 to Blackhawks.

In the second quarter Jordan dropped in the first of his two trademark, 3 pointers that he would score in the match. There was also a notable skirmish under the net with Freddy and Jordan putting in a strong fight to gain a valuable two points.  Tyrone Werthiem and Tate put in some good fast breaks with one leading to Tate being fouled and again he scored on both his free throws.  Defensively James, Tate and Freddy made some good interceptions and the second quarter finished with Blackhawks maintaining their lead at 38 - 33.

Blackhawks started to really feel the pain of the lack of player rotation in the third quarter. Some excellent defensive work with rebounds taken by James and Freddy, and some strong drives, with free throws awarded for Tyrone, Freddy and James, who showed some  good shooting skills, James 2 out of 2 and Freddy 3 out 4.   The third quarter was the first time that Kestrels took the lead, but Tate, in typical attacking style, immediately set off on a fast break and struck back to bring Blackhawks level and the team went on to finish the quarter with a 53 - 49 lead.

The fourth quarter was a tense finale, Coach Dean doing his best to inspire tired legs, the team went out and fought strongly and even though they were down seven points at one stage, they never gave up.  Jordan dropped in his second 3 pointer and Tyrone employed some fancy footwork under the net.  Unfortunately, lack of players for rotation also leads to an accumulation of penalty fouls and in the last two minutes Blackhawks were reduced to four men.  With only two points in it, Kestrels killed the clock, by resorting to passing without risking an attack, with that, Kestrels hung on to take the win 73/75.

Overall it was clearly disappointing to have so many team members missing from the bench, a full strength Blackhawks' ten would have walked this match, and hopefully numbers will be back up next week.  However in the circumstances a determined performance from the available five, and one that they should individually be very pleased with.

After the game coach Dean commented, "...to compete in a game against such a well disciplined and experienced team such as Kestrels with just five players was never going to be an easy task.  Strategically there wasn't really a lot I could do other than to try and use the five allowed timeouts to give the players brief rests throughout the 40 minutes.  These five young men should be extremely proud of the way they performed in this game.  We held the lead for the vast majority of the game and it was solely the result of fatigue which eventually led to a late foul that took Freddy out of the game.  Obviously, a win would have been nice but, for me, witnessing the commitment and discipline displayed by my team was reward enough."

08.01.11 National League Away against Kingston Wildcats (54-68)

The Blackhawks soared into the new year with an impressive win over the Wildcats at their first match of 2011, held at Wildcats home court in Chessington.   Within seconds of tip-off, Captain, Jordan Tyler, showed his abilities with a trademark three pointer.  Jordan's was the only three pointer throughout the whole match.  The Blackhawks then set off at a pace which saw them maintain a lead over Kingston for the whole game.

The starting five of Jordan Tyler, Tate Barber, Gima Nwana, Tyrone Wertheim and Freddy Dines took command of the first quarter and finished with a lead of 17 -12.  The first quarter was also notable for a complete lack of fouls by Blackhawks.  The second quarter saw play from James Allen and Seb Moulding which helped contribute to a lead of 41 -21.

Some very impressive baskets were scored throughout the match, with Tate achieving the most with a stunning 22 points.  Tyrone was not far behind with 16.  Next up, Gima was unlucky to have only scored 10 points as he was fighting hard at the basket throughout the first half.  Freddy and Jordan were next with three baskets and James netted once.

Defensively the Blackhawks were more controlled than in some previous matches, with some excellent steals by several players.  Wildcats showed no sign of giving in, despite the score, and following a very harsh refereeing decision in the third quarter which saw Gima ejected from the game.  This unsettled the Blackhawks and the Wildcats fought back strongly.  However, once Blackhawks had regained their composure they slipped into cruise mode and never looked in any real danger.

All the players worked hard throughout the game, making the most of opportunities with some effective passing skills on display.  Fast breaks were made by several of the Blackhawk players, notably Tate and Tyrone, with solid supporting performances by the whole team, with Freddy, Gima, Tate and Tyrone all putting in some great assists.

Overall a good team performance from a young team who are now just beginning to really work together.  Mid-way through the season, prospects are excellent for a strong finish.

09.10.10 - National League Away at Solent Kestrels II

The first game of the season is always a nervous time for the players and the coach alike.  The first competitive test on the game court is where any weaknesses, any uncertainty about the offence or any fitness issues will truly show up for the first time.

Fortunately, the five Blackhawks' starters (Tate Barber, Freddy Dines, Jordan Tyler, Adam Sansom and Gima Nwana) were in game-mode from the tip.  A close and hard-fought 1st quarter, which saw the lead constantly changing but always within a point or two, ended tied at 19-19.

With depth on the bench Woking were able to rotate players constantly to keep fresh legs on the floor and maintain the pace and intensity of the game.  But despite contributions from Caspar Lucas, Marian Molnar and Tyrone Wertheim, the Kestrels managed to take an 8 point lead in to the half-time break.

Quarter 3, despite an early steal and basket from Barber, saw the Kestrels extend their lead to 17.  A timeout was necessary to plug a 'leak' in Woking's defence and following this adjustment the Solent offence was halted enough to limit their scoring while Woking put some points of their own on the board.  A strong and determined finish to the quarter from Lucas and Barber got Blackhawks right back in to the game bringing the score back to within two points at 59-57.

The final period was all Blackhawks as a very strong defensive effort kept Solent to a mere 4 points while on the offensive end Woking were able put together a 14-0 run thanks to contributions from Molnar, Barber, Sansom, Lucas, and with his first NL score, James Allen.

The game ended with a very satisfying Blackhawks win, 63-72.  The game's MVP award went to Junior, Caspar Lucas, with a very strong first NL appearance for Woking achieving 16 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. Other notable performances came from Tate Barber with 14 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 1 block, and a great effort from forward, Adam Sansom, with a double-double scoring 11 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Blackhawks: Freddy Dines (3), Tyrone Wertheim (9), Jordan Tyler (2), Caspar Lucas (16), Marian Molnar (6), James Allen (1), Adam Sansom (11), Tate Barber (14), Gima Nwanna (10), Alex Lewry ().
