19.02.12 Blackhawks 109 - 29 Bristol Academy Flyers

Blackhawks avenge only defeat of the season in big win over Bristol Academy Flyers to move to 8-1

In November the young Blackhawks suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Flyers. However, with no losses since that day, confidence was high among the squad.

Starting for Woking were Xavier, George, Andrew(c), Liam and Harry. An early 5-0 run was matched by Bristol to tie the game at 5, Two more baskets took Woking to a 9-5 lead halfway through the quarter. Coach Dean then subbed the entire team for the other 5 of Chase, Leon, Dan, Carl and Tino. Their challenge to outscore the starters for the remainder of the quarter. This they achieved, extending to a 19-11 lead at the end of the quarter.

In the 2nd, the Blackhawks took control of the game. Restricting Bristol to 6 points, and scoring 30 including a 22-0 run to end the half. Carl and Harry lead the scoring. The 3rd quarter was more of the same. Woking's point guards played well with Xavier's jump shooting and Chase's assists. Xavier and Harry led the scoring, but the most popular points came from Leon who had 4 in the quarter. The score was 78-27 after 3.

The final quarter was hugely impressive defensively. Bristol were restricted to just 2 points, and Woking finished with a 23-0 run to finish with 109 points on the day. The most by any team in the conference this season.

Harry finished with an incredible 49 points, which was just one short of the club record. Along with that he had 18 rebounds and 8 blocks. A remarkable performance. Carl and Xavier both scored 15, Carl adding 5 rebounds. Tino had 8 points and 12 rebounds. George and Andrew both scored 6, Leon 4, Liam, Dan and Chase 2. Liam also had 10 rebounds, Chase 6 assists.

The team improves to 8-1 on the season with 5 games to go. Next up is a long road trip to Taunton.

05.02.12 Blackhawks 100 - 56 Surrey Heat

Blackhawks now 7-1 after hitting triple digits for the first time against the Heat.

For the first time this season a full squad of 12 was available including the newest Blackhawk Ben. Woking dominated the game, however gave away too many fast break points, and the final score of 100 represented a slowing down in the 4th quarter. Still, it was an all round fine performance with the team shooting 49% from the field and 70% from the line.

Stats:

Harry 39 points 22 reb 9 blk, Andrew 10 pts 6 reb, Carl 9 pts, Ben 8 pts 5 reb, George 8 pts, 5 reb, Ben 8 pts 5 reb, Xavier 6 pts 9 ast, Dan 6 pts, Tino 6 pts 6 reb, Liam 4 pts 11 reb, Chase 3 pts 4 ast 3 stl, Leon 1 pt.

22.01.12 Blackhawks 96 - 49 Dorset Storm

Blackhawks improve to 6-1 after a good win against a spirited Storm side.

Another good crowd at Winston Churchill for our first game against a team we'd already played. Starting for this one were Chase Overcash(vc), Joe Bendle, Carl Savona, Liam Lundal and Harry Wood.

Liam opened the scoring in what would be his most productive game of the season so far. Dorset managed just one score from the field in the quarter, but did get to the line 5 times. Harry top scored with 9 in the quarter, Andrew had 6, Liam 4, Carl and Tino 2 each. Score after was 23-7 Blackhawks.

Quarter two saw the Blackhawks push out to a 20 point lead including a 3 from Andrew, before an 8-0 run from the Storm halfway through the quarter. Blackhawks then exploded for 17 points before halftime. Scorers in the quarter were Andrew 8, Harry 1, Xavier 2, Tino 4, Liam 4, Carl 4. 46-23 at the half.

In quarter 3 the Storm's lively No. 15 got to the line 6 times as the Blackhawks ran up the fouls. In all, the Blackhawks committed 27 fouls in the game. This was the closest quarter of the game with Woking scoring 18. These were by Liam 2, Harry 4, Xavier 1, Andrew 6, George 4, Chase 1. Score after was 64-34.

Coach Dean set a target for the team to get to by halfway through the 4th, and although they fell just short of this, there was added intensity to the Blackhawks play in the 4th, with everyone determined to make a contribution, and this they did. A high scoring final quarter with 32 scored and which meant the entire squad had scored. Scorers were Joe 2, Liam 3, Xavier 6, Leon 2, Harry 6, Andrew 8, Carl 2, Dan 3.

Overall stats wise. Andrew top scored with 28 including 3 three pointers. Harry has his customary double double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. 14.01.12 Blackhawks 61-45 Solent Kestrels

A huge win for the Blackhawks against the previously undefeated Solent Kestrels. It was the first time we'd played at Woking Leisure Centre. The team had plenty of support from family and other Blackhawks teams. Starting five were new signing Xavier Grant, Andrew Wright(c), Carl Savona, Liam Lundal and Harry Wood.

After an early Kestrels basket, the Blackhawks started to take control with a very strong defensive effort. Solent couldn't find a way of getting to the basket, and could not stop Harry who had 8 in the quarter. Chase hit a 3 pointer as the Blackhawks pushed out to a 17-5 lead after one.

In the second, a 9-0 run including 4 from Carl and a 3 pointer from Xavier put the Blackhawks up by 21. The strong defensive effort continued whoever was on the floor, limiting Solent to 10 points in the quarter and extending the lead to 32-15.

Quarter 3 and time for Solent to make a run. With Harry in foul trouble, Solent had a 12-0 run and the full court press caused problems. The Blackhawks scored just 9 in the 3rd with 4 from Andrew. Blackhawks up 41-32.

Final quarter and a huge opportunity for a great win wasn't going to be wasted. Harry scored 6 and Chase 5 as the Blackhawks eased away again to round off a great afternoon for Woking with a 61-45 final score.

Harry had another double double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Carl 11 points, Andrew, Xavier and Chase all scored 8. 72% free throws by the team. The effort, enthusiasm and application of all the players whether on the court or not was outstanding. This win sets us up well for the remainder of the season, well done to all and thanks to all the supporters!

04.12.11 Blackhawks 81-28 Taunton Huish Tigers

The Blackhawks welcomed Taunton to a cold Winston Churchill School. For the first time this season a full squad was available. Chase Overcash earned his place in the starting line up with some excellent work in training. Joining him were Captain Andrew Wright, George Paisley, Tino Mungoshi and Harry Wood in the starting five.

Straight from the tip, Woking took the league with a score from Tino. This began a 20-0 run, 14 of which were scored by Harry. The first quarter finished with the Blackhawks up 22-7.

Anoher run by Woking to start the 3rd, this time a 14-0 with scores from George, Harry, Tino and Carl. The offence was becoming a little sloppy, but the defence was strong, Taunton were restricted to just 3 points in the 3rd quarter, and the Blackhawks took a 67-20 lead into the final quarter.

No run to start the 4th, and the offence continued to struggle to execute as we had trained. Lots of fouls from the Blackhawks, in fact everyone picked up at least one foul. Joe scored in the quarter and Chase got 6, as Woking won the final quarter 14-8 to bring a final score of 81-28 in favour of the home team.

Scorers were: Harry 28, Andrew 14, Carl 12, Chase 10, Tino 9, George 4, Dan 2, Joe 2

The visitors started well, scoring the first points and leading 8-6 halfway through the first. The Blackhawks finished the quarter strong with two baskets from Harry, to take a 12-10 lead after one. Chase and Carl both also scored for Woking.

Tino is the MVP. His blocks in the 2nd quarter was the spark that lead the team to win so convincingly. He ended with 9 blocks, which meant he was just one away from recording a triple double, as he had 13 rebounds and 13 points.

Blackhawks go 3-0, next up Bristol Academy Flyers away.

05.11.11 Surrey Heat 49 - 82 Blackhawks

The second game of the U14's National League season was the shortest away trip to play Surrey Heat in Lightwater. It was the squad's first game since team captain Arthur left for Australia.

The starting five were George Paisley, Joe Bendle, new team captain Andrew Wright, Tino Mungosui and Harry Wood.

Andrew opened the scoring straight from the tip. The Heat immediately levelled things up, before Harry gave Woking the lead again. A lead they would never relinquish. A 12-0 run put them up 14-2. At the end of the first quarter the score was 20-7 to Woking, Andrew had scored 10 points included a 3 pointer, Harry 8 points.

The second quarter didn't start well for Woking as the Heat put on a 10-0 run in the first 2 minutes to close to with 3 points. However, the Blackhawks recovered to stretch the lead to 10 again by halftime with the scoring more spread out than in the 1st quarter. Leon, Joe, George, Chase, Tino and Harry all scoring. Dan found himself with in foul trouble with two quick fouls in the last minute, making 3 in total. Half time score was 35-25 to Blackhawks.

The start of the 3rd quarter was quite sloppy from Woking as the Heat went to a full court press. The Blackhawks committed multiple turnovers, however the lead didn't drop below 5, and 9-0 run to finish the quarter including 6 consecutive points from Harry meant a commanding 51-37 scoreline going into the final quarter.

The final quarter was all Blackhawks. They'd sussed the full court press and the Heat were in the penalty after just two minutes. The Blackhawks took 23 free throws in the final quarter. Three Heat players fouled out, and the Blackhawks cruised away to win the quarter 31-12 with points spread throughout the squad. A convincing win, but still plenty to work on in training to reduce turnovers, execute the offence, and defensive positioning.

Harry was again MVP with another double double of 27 points 10 rebounds plus 5 blocks. Tino also had a double double of 10 points 18 rebounds and 3 blocks. Andrew scored 23 points.

2-0, 14 games to go!

15.10.11  Dorset Storm 45-71 Blackhawks

MVP Harry Wood

The opening game of the u14’s National League season saw this newly formed squad travel to Dorset to face the Storm.

Coming off a winning 2010-11 season and play-off appearance the Storm would be hoping to continue with their winning ways – Blackhawks had other ideas.

With several players unavailable for this trip, Woking arrived at the venue with a reduced team of 8 players.  However, spirits were high and the long wait for game one was finally over.  A very strong starting five took to the court, at the point guard position, Carl Savona, shooting guard, Andrew Wright, power forward and team captain, Arthur Barendson, forward, Tino Mungosui, and centre, Harry Wood.

It was Arthur who opened the scoring to give his team the lead and set the pace for the first quarter.  Tino got to the foul line early and made both to increase the lead.  Harry scored twice and Arthur added a further 4 points to give Woking a Q1 lead of 7 with the scoreboard reading 5-12.

Arthur continued with a strong offensive display taking every opportunity to drive to the hoop.  George Paisley entered the game and immediately contributed on offence with a succession of in-rhythm jump shots, adding 6 points to take Woking’s lead to 12 by the end of Q2, 17-29.

With a few adjustments made to the defence during the half time break, Blackhawks returned to the court with the goal of bettering their 1st half performance and winning the game by no less than 24 point.  Q3 became the Carl and Andrew show who combined to put 18 point on the board in an 8 minute period.  With a supporting cast of Harry, Tino and Arthur, each scoring 2 points, the quarter ended with Woking up by 22, 31-53.

In the fourth quarter the Storm seemed to be more fired-up and came out all guns blazing and produced their best performance to the game.  This meant that everyone would have to step up on defence and apply more pressure on the ball.  This added pressure from Leon Cawsey, Dan Bennett, Arthur and Andrew led to 11 steals which not only disrupted Dorset’s offence but produced some fast break opportunities for us at the other end of the court.

With a very good performance from the Woking team the game ended 45-71 to give Blackhawks a perfect start to their season – the winning margin, 26 points!

Top scorers: Arthur Barendson: 16,  Andrew Wright:16, Harry Wood, 15.  Arthur and Andrew also matched each other in steals, each with 4.

Other notable performances came from Carl Savona, 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, Tino Mungosui, 8 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.

The game's MVP goes to Harry Wood with a double-double, 15 points and 17 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.
