16.05.10 - Wessex Junior Cup Final
Blackhawks 73-34 Reading Rockets
The U14 final of the Wessex Junior Cup was a repeat of last season with these two rival clubs once again beating all opposition to make it through to the final undefeated - now something had to give!
A full strength Blackhawks side were set on revenge for the defeat of twelve months ago. Forward, Adrian Molnar won the tip and sent the ball straight to the hands of guard, David McCampbell who calmly put his team ahead with an opening lay-up just two seconds in to the game. Moments later Rob Derienzo contributed with 2 points in transition. A great defensive effort produced a succession of Reading turnovers and allowed Woking to get in to their stride early, going on a 12-0 run with contributions from all five starters (Sam Bickle (PG), Mandius Lundal (C)).
Continuous player rotation allowed the Blackhawks to control and maintain the fast pace of the game at both ends of the floor. Greg Walker came off the bench for Lundal and made an immediate impact with a quick 2 points. New signing Ollie Brown came in for McCampbell and finished the quarter with two baskets taking the score to 18-7.
Quarter 2 saw Woking increase the pressure defensively and push the ball on offence. Whilst keeping Rockets' scoring down to just 6 points, the young Hawks, through some impressive team play, found their way to the hoop time and again with bench contributions from Thomas Smillie-Bounds and Ben Clifton, and some great connections between Lundal, Molnar and Bickle. This unselfish play enabled Woking to extend their lead at the half to 41-13.
Obviously, from this point on the outcome of the game was never in any doubt, but the continued focus and superb execution in defence, transition and offence allowed Blackhawks to win all four quarters comfortably. It was pleasing to see scoring contributions from the entire squad and from all areas of the floor. A dominating performance under the offensive basket from Molnar and Lundal, and 3-pointers from Bickle and McCampbell added to the final score of 73-34.
Sam Bickle was chosen as the game's MVP by the Wessex officials.
Blackhawks: Jasper Post (2), Ben Clifton (3), Mandius Lundal (12), David McCampbell (15) Sam Bickle (14), Greg Walker (2), Rob Derienzo (4), Adrian Molnar (16), Thomas Smillie-Bounds (1), Ollie Brown (4).
11.10.09 - Blackhawks 71-9 Sunbury Sonics
Blackhawks' U14s began their Surrey CVL campaign on Sunday at Richard Challoner School, New Malden, against Sunbury Sonics.
The team was in great spirits and eager to take to the court. Their enthusiasm showed as they steadily built a first quarter lead of 11-4.
Q2 saw the young Blackhawks dominate totally as they shut out the Sonics while piling on the points. Running the point for Woking was David McCampbell who put on an impressive display of individual and team play as he contributed 16 points, 1 steal and 1 assist.
Sonics only managed to score a further 5 points, while Woking went on to amass to total of 71!
25.09.09 - Feltham Warriors
Not quite the start to the season everyone involved with this young u14s squad would have hoped for. Having trained together for just 3 weeks Woking's first game in the Heat CVL at Bracknell saw them up against last season's champions, Feltham.
From the start it was clear that certain key players were struggling to get in to their groove, with communication between the starting five being one area that will need to improve before game 2.
Some positives were the encouraging performances from point guard David McCampbell and centre Mandius Lundal, both making their debuts in Blackhawks jerseys, and the feeling within the organisation that there is so much potential in this squad that this early disappointment will soon be a very distant memory.
With the start of the new competitive season now less than a week away the U14 squad is ready to continue where we left off in May.
The squad's newly appointed captain, Joel Eggar, will lead the way together with Rob Derienzo, Josh Morreales, Julian Carlsson, Jacob Hutchinson and Sohrab Doroduand all of whom return for their senior season.
This already impressive line-up are now joined by Jasper Post, Thomas Smillie-Bounds, Ben Clifton and Jim Kenealy moving up from the U12s, and new signings Charlie Gray, Sebastian Van Haaften, Robbie Treloar, Mandius Lundal and David McCampbell.
With such a strong squad hopes are high that we'll be in good shape to go one step further this season and not only make finals but come away with the trophies.
