U12s Girls Match Reports 2009-10
Under 12 Girls Dominate the January Tournament
Date: 18th January 2010
Scores:
32 - 18 (win) against MV Phoenix
38 - 12 (win) against Tamaraws
15 - 10 (win) against Spellthorne Atoms
January 18 was a red-letter day for the u12 girls as they won all three games at the Chessington Sports Centre. Cher, Leah and Olivia all put up big numbers but the real story is the way the squad gelled as a team, playing good defense, passing the ball and holding the turnover count down.
In the final game the girls came from behind against a tough Spelthorne Atoms team that had beaten us soundly in our first game of the year. In the first half Spelthorne’s huge centre jammed up the middle, making it very hard for us to score as Spethorne jumped out to lead of 8-2 at the quarter. But then in the second half Cher threw a series of four beautiful half court passes to Olivia who was hustling down the floor ahead of her defender and continued in for layups. Olivia also shut down the Atoms leading scorer in the second half and the girls ended up cruising to a 15-10 win with Rachel, Leah and Cher also scoring and Cher, Leah and Olivia pulling down 19 rebounds between them. But there were lots of good contributions, including error-free play from Capucine and Elisha who had between them a rebound, steal assist and bonus. Jade had three rebounds.
Earlier in the day the girls had two easy wins, beating Mole Valley Phoenix 32-18 and the Tamaraws 38-12.
Against the Phoenix Rebecca scored her first points in only her second outing with the team, catching a pass while in the open, taking one dribble to the basket and canning a shot without any hesitation. She later stole the ball and saw a similar shot just rim out on her. Meanwhile, Rachel “the microwave” Walton came off the bench and heated up instantly, going 3 for 3 from the floor. Jade had 6 points and 5 rebounds while handling a tough defensive assignment. Elisha had 4 rebounds and 2 points.
The Blackhawks dominated the boards against the Tamaraws. Leah, Olivia and Cher had 13, 13 and 10 rebounds respectively. Olivia had 18 points. Cher started to really blossom as a point guard, racking 5 assists and three steals. Jade had a great all-around game: 4 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 2 bonuses. But without a doubt the highlight of the game was Leah’s 3-pointer that just beat the third-quarter buzzer and was followed by a big hug from Coach Parry. Although this will be one of hundreds of career 3-pointer it will never be forgotten
Blackhawks start season with a win, draw and loss in Surrey CVL
Date: 15th November 2009
Scores:
8 - 16 (Loss) against Spelthorn Atoms
20 - 20 (Draw) against Kingston Wildcats
50 - 8 (win) against MV Phoenix
The first tournament of the year for the u12 girls started with a tough game against Spelthorn boys. A combination of turnovers, missed layups and not covering the basket in defence lead to the girls loosing 8-16. However, this was one the girls could have won and this will be a target to win when they meet at the next tournament.
The second game was again a tough encounter this time against Kingston Wildcats boys. The Wildcats were leading 18-20 with one minute to play when a basket from Leah Parry tied the scores. The game finished 20-20. This was a great team effort from everyone to save the game.
In the last game the girls finally got into their stride and started playing some great basketball. Tough defence kept the MV Phoenix out of the game, while free scoring at the other end assured the Blackhawks of their first victory of 2009.
Top Scorer: Leah Parry 26 points for the tournament.
Team: Jade Blackburn (4), Olivia Spagat (18), Elisha Foxley (2), Leah Parry (26), Rachel Walton (14), and Cher Lamb (10)
