Flyers Retain the Surrey Rosebowl

The Surrey Rosebowl Tournament was held at the Surrey Sports Park on Sunday and the Woking Blackhawk Flyers were out to retain the title having won it three times in the past four years.

It was inevitable

not a straightforward process. In their first game against Yateley Silverbacks they rapidly gained a 10-point advantage which to the despair of Coach Knode they just as rapidly relinquished. For the remainder of the game it was ‘nip and tuck’ until in the dying seconds when a inbound by the Flyers was turned over and provided the Silverbacks with a scoring opportunity for then to claim the game.

This was the last game they lost, the second game against Cheam was soundly won and the Flyers claimed second place in the league. This meant in the knock out rounds they then played and beat top of the opposing Division Kingston Wildcats to move into the semi finals.

By a twist of the structure of the knockout rounds the Flyers played again Yateley Silverbacks in the Semi-final and this time there was no mistake enabling the Flyers to progress to the Final against Sutton Rockets.

By this time the Flyers were on a roll with confidence high and smoothly progressed through the final with a 10 point winning margins 30:20.

Coach Knode was pleased with his squad’s performance, whilst having to give a few ‘home truths’ after their first match defeat they had responded and showed great promise for the upcoming National League season.
Devon James was MVP for the tournament, however it was a squad performance that provided the victory.
